Sports Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Sports - Essay ExampleFor example, the 100 Metres race is known to be dominated by black good deal. White people shy away from it because they assume that they do not have the energy to run as riotous as the blacks do. On the other hand, white people dominate swimming more than the black people do. White people atomic number 18 known to happen most of their time in water. This creates the perception to blacks that whites are best at swimming, and other races in the sport cannot replace them. This essay will explain the effects of race in sports, and how it affects the performance of participants in different fields of sports. Most people and participants know the effect of race on sports. In various universities in the USA, there are certain sports that are mostly practised only by people of a certain racial identity. This has a lot to do with the economic condition of people who belong to the African American community which is pastally underprivileged also due to preconceived notions and prejudices. There are more reasons for this, the primary one being the historical one where they had entrance to formal education for a short period due to slavery. Even today, there are many prejudices that are associated with race in the minds of people of all races. Sport is seen as one of the main ways African youths can escape the indigence of the places they were born. For the eradication of such beliefs, education is considered as the best remedy. People like Booker T. Washington (Washington, 2006) also suggested this. There are, however, problems that have occurred during the implementation of this policy. Many African Americans secure admissions to good colleges because of their skills in sports, and this often makes them to neglect other aspects like their education. Due to the oppressive circumstances, they have to go through many see this as the only avenue that is open. This discussion is about those sections of the African American community that is eco nomically underprivileged, and not those that have achieved a high social status in their lives. The importance of this difference must be understood, and affirmative governmental action should be taken to account for the differences that are engendered by class distinctions, while at the same time being aware of the handicaps that racial oppression has created in the society. Interest in sports has also to do with history and the challenge that the African American community took up for attempting to rival the other races that had oppressed them for long. Sadly, this took on the form of a machismo that had the corollary of leading to the oppression of African American women at the hands of African American men. It is important to look at this lack of strategic essentialism, in an analysis of the importance of sports in the development of certain unhealthy social trends amongst people of the African American community. Sport has led to the achievement of many laurels for the United States of America. However, it has led to the polarisation of several communities based on essentials that has stemmed from historic stereotypes and inequalities. In Stuck in the shallow End Education, Race, and Computing, UCLA researcher Margolis Jane outlines the history of swimming in the USA to show how blacks have been affected by inadequate access to swimming facilities and lessons. She asserts In most cases of discrimination, typecasts and systems of beliefs about dissimilar ethnic gender groups genetic makeup and

Public Health & diligent Safety T to each oneing in Pharmacy and confederate Health Care Curriculum (EXCEPT Medicine Schools) - Essay ExampleThe deal also involved a thorough analysis of each part of the module, complicate a pre-test, and a comparison of those results with the marks earned on module exams (Leedy & Ormrod, 2010).The purpose of this test was to analyse the effectiveness of the new Public Health and Patient Safety module at the University of Hertfordshire. Both areas are covered extensively by the GPhC and, as such, needed a formal place within the pharmaceutic curriculum at university. Recommendations for improving the module were made based upon initial observations and the average performance of students in key sections of the course. The design of this study revolved close to the use of an in-depth questionnaire that made use of germinal research and current module information in order to elicit valid and accurate information from each responding student (Egger s & Jones, 1998).An in-depth interview was also conducted with the faculty members in which they were encouraged to give their honest feedback about the module, generally involving perceived strengths and weaknesses relative to student performance. All students were sure of the basis for their study and told that their participation was entirely voluntary. No student was forced to participate, and their eventual participation was kept confidential and anonymous at all times. This process also enabled the distribution of a pre and post survey, analysis of existing course work, and the interviews previously mentioned. The survey results indicates the possible reality that either students are entering the module already possessing much of the requisite information covered in the course, or the module is not proving effective at hitting the major concepts proposed by the GPhC.The implications of this study indicate a need to rework certain sections of the module to cover more areas that are deemed important by the GPhC, thereby better preparing undergraduate students for their exams. The interviews revealed a

A Reaction to the Article Are Poor People Responsible for Their Own Essay - 4

A Reaction to the Article Are Poor People Responsible for Their Own Poverty - Essay ExampleLarzelere argues Being paltry was non a choice, it was a condition brought about by the people in power. Upon examining the substance of their individual arguments at depth, I feel disposed to prefer the post that acknowledges the truth of poverty as perceived in reality where in general, due to a number of factors that influence our state of the economy, we may not seemingly put the blame on the poor. Even if the poor may, to a certain extent, be observed weak in the ability to improve themselves in call of economy, we ought to understand that they do not merely struggle with the financial aspect of living. Poor people find it difficult to gain inspiration from a demoralize environment they dwell in for evidently, the strong presence of vices, crimes, violence, and other elements that threaten to ruin or degrade the quality of life in a alliance bears negative impact in their attitude t oward personal growth. Moreover, we may not have them take the sole accountability of neglecting to live with decent income and shelter for intimately of them are either those uneducated or those who receive but an inadequate amount of formal learning so that they barely have a right way of determining suit sufficient professional careers or of simply employing themselves to be resourceful and persevering in finding work that matches ones pock of skills. Jensen accuses the poor of being lazy, irresponsible, and unable to handle money and the tasks of every day yet on suggesting to remedy this situation By developing work moral philosophy and feeling some sense of pride and ownership of the money, we may with high-pitched voice collectively ask, in return, how? How are these less fortunate citizens able to manage at least knowing what work ethics is about if they do not have work in the first place and how throw out they be proud of monetary possession if the little money they h ave is immediately spent on basic necessities and nothing remains to be save for the comfort of future living? Larzelere appears as rather one-sided in suspecting people in power when it comes to the matter of significant control over the poor which keeps the latter from advancing to a higher level of self-net worth. I agree, however, to the writers biased stand because, in view of the actual occurrences, it seems more clean to catch red-handed those who are corrupt in their acquisition of considerable wages with tax anomalies than those who are paying taxes delinquently on the ground of working in an irregular basis.

Should Animals Be Used for Research Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Should Animals Be Used for Research - Term Paper ExampleScientific breakthrough has created a healthier society and longer smell expectancy. Scientists withstand traveled a long way of research to meet this end. Yet, the price being paid is so high because the lives of mans superstar such as dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, and others are being sacrificed in various carnal exam and research for medical advancement. In a simpler term, we are facing a confusing thought of, Is animal research, a Blessing or a Curse? Evidently, medical scientists consider animal research as a blessing. They have attained numerous achievements on developing medicines, antibiotics, medical treatments, operational procedures and even organ transplants. Dreadful diseases such as the epidemic of influenza, typhus, infantile paralysis, poliomyelitis, small pox, enteric fever fever, diphtheria, measles, malaria, pneumonia and others are being controlled and treated. All of these things would not become poss ible without the help of animal testing and research. Let us put it this way. Let us say, that you are in a critical condition. Your life is in danger due to an illness or an epidemic. I am pretty sure that you dont want to die, especially at this moment that your are still young. What if the only way to save your life is to sacrifice a life of a rat, or a rabbit, or maybe a monkey, for research in order to test and produce the medical treatment intended for you? If thats the only way you can be saved from an excruciating disease and even death, would you reject the idea of animal research and prefer to die instead, just because you are against the animal research technology? Is it really worth to die than put the animal in laboratory research and suffer pain while being experimented? Or is it really worth it that animals should be sacrificed in order to save human lives? So the question is simply as, Who must be sacrificed, an animal life, or a human life? This reminds me of a situ ation in ancient times, during the bible times or before Christ era. According to the bible, as attested by historical facts, people of ancient times are used to sacrifice lives of animals, particularly sheep and goats, in order to gain Gads favor and right standing before Him. So, would it be possible that even God himself consider animals research as a blessing for humankind? This is such an emotional emergence for individuals who are against animals research. Probably, in their own points of visible horizon, this situation is impossible to overcome because evidently they consider animals research as a curse. Since they oppose the idea of using animals in laboratory experiments for developing possible cures to common rampant diseases due to ethical issues, would it be easy for them to stood by this principle and tell directly to the doctor that do not use the animals for laboratory test for my health benefits or for treatment of my illness? In the stance of a pro-medical techno logies using animal testing, they may view those in the opposing side as short-minded persons or extremely fanatic and traditional. If you will watch the 3-minute video clip of the PETA organization, People for Ethical treatment of Animals, regarding their anti-animal testing stand in the you tube, with a video URL link of http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QRBcHIIsXc you might occur them quite reasonable in their points of view. You might find this video as heart-stirring in behalf of the lives of animals being sacrificed in animal laboratory research. You will surely understand the ethical issues that they want to point out and will to fight for. It is true, like humans, how animals

Does flexibility in location and time affect behavior towards work Research Paper

Does tractability in location and time affect behavior towards work - Research Paper ExampleThe tec clearly identifies the research problem before working on the research. He clearly states the problem and links the problem to the current way of doing things. In the title, reinvigorated ways of working does flexibility in time and location of work change work behavior and affect business outcomes? the detective has here clearly indicated, using this title, that he intends to identify, if any, how flexibility in time and location of work changes the work behavior and affect business outcomes. Further, in the abstract, the researcher explains what he room by business outcomes, where he identifies business outcomes to be the productivity of a business. It is important to note that his identification of what business outcomes means breaks would be ambiguity in the statement and makes it easier for the reader to follow on the purpose of the research. Therefore, the question that ling ers is whether it is easy to determine what the researcher intends research? Yes it is. The researcher intends to find out how the New ship canal of Working which bring about the flexibility in the time and location of work affects the productivity of a business and the impacts it has on the work behavior. (Strauss, Kochan, & Ichnowiski, 2000)Literature follow-upThe author has not literature review section, which in my view weakens the credibility of the research. Having literature review works to give legitimacy to what one is studying and connects it to antecedently done works. Such a connection would enable readers of the research document to figure out what previous researchers have suggested in their findings regarding a similar root or a related one. With nothing to compare the research with or to derive scientific knowledge from this puts dents on the findings of this research because of the lack of a benchmark. That having been said, the researcher tried to use others fin dings in his references and in text citations e.g. The Telework Trendlines 2009 7 reported that the number of U.S. employees who worked remotely at least one day per month increased 39% in two years from approximately 12.4 million in 2006 to 17.2 million in 2008. Though this is worth mentioning, it cannot be used to replace the literature review section (Merle, Schelvis, Groenesteijn, & Vink, 2012). Objective and assumption When it comes to the identification of the objectives and the hypotheses of the research, the researcher did a good job since it is very clear from the beginning what the research intends to achieve. The research question is does flexibility in time and location of work change work behavior and affect business outcomes? which is clear in the tile of the research and severally reiterate throughout the research document. The hypothesis of the research has not been clearly stated though was indirectly alluded. Expectations of these measures are often high, such as a step-down in operating costs and an increase of productivity. Here the researcher is trying to give the general expectations of the research though he is not clearly stating what the hypothesis is. Ordinarily, the researcher would be expected to identify the research hypothesis

Raman Spectroscopy of Toluene and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Lab Report

Raman Spectroscopy of Toluene and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Rhodamine 6G - Lab Report ExampleIn Raman spectrographic analysis, light and intimacy interacts. Both IR and Raman vibrational bands are described by their frequency (i.e energy), band shape, and intensity. At low frequencies, the fingerprint division is found for most compounds. Raman spectroscopy is much easier to use at low frequencies compared to IR, this is because at low frequencies very many bands are visible on the spectrum. With Raman spectroscopy, it is possible to reject the laser station at low frequency modes this would minimize the bands that are seen at the fingerprint region. With IR, this is not possible, and as a result the spectrum cannot be refined to reduce the congestion of peaks.Toluene (methylbenzene) has a CH3 group attached to the benzene ring, for IR spectroscopy, the CH3 group exists at just below 1500 cm-1. This is just at the start of the fingerprint region therefore Raman spectroscopy wo uld be much better at elucidating its structure over IR.Fluorescence is a spectrochemical method of analysis where the molecules of the analyte are excited by lance at a certain wavelength and emit radiation of a different wavelength. The emission spectrum provides information for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. When light of an appropriate wavelength is negligent by a molecule (i.e., excitation), the electronic state of the molecule changes from the ground state to one of many vibrational levels in one of the excited electronic states. The excited electronic state is usually the first excited singlet state, S1 (Figure 1). Once the molecule is in this excited state, relaxation can occur through several processes. Fluorescence is one of these processes and results in the emission of light.Fluorescence corresponds to the relaxation of the molecule from the singlet excited state to the singlet ground state with emission of light. Fluorescence has short lifetime (10-8 se c) so that in many molecules it can compete favorably with collision deactivation, intersystem crossing and

Theatre Model Essay Example for Free

Theatre Model EssayTheatre Royale is a theatre in the suburbs of London. A show is performed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays nights and on the other days the theatre is closed although on some days I go in to check the email and the post to see if anyone has inquiries. The chore is that far too much clip is spent on calculating the income make by the theatre by hand because all the sums are severe and take a long age to work disclose by hand or even with a calculator so a ready reckoner is needed because it could save lots of time because tedious sums can be saved as a formula and used again and again. This nonplus go forth be very useful to Theatre Royale because it go out enable me to manage and seem my income (profit or loss) easily, quickly and effectively, as I lead explain. On a computer after checking that all my formulas are correct once I can save the correct formulas so there entrust be a very small chance that any of my figures and end results will be inco rrect whereas doing it by hand I had to check if my figures were correct every time I worked out any sum if I wanted to stop mistakes occurring. So an advantage is that a computer cuts down the amount of mistakes happening in a much shorter time. Also on a computer my data will be clear, important data can be highlighted and any corrections I make wont be seen, whereas when I used to work out the figures on paper it was very messy with crossings out. It was unclear what I was move to do, to anyone else who looked at the paper. So another advantage is it will be much clearer and easier to read. All these advantages likewise contribute to saving time. So before lots of time was being wasted (time is money) which could have been used to help the theatre in other aspects and therefore produce more money by having more time. So this model will be cost effective. Also employ a model I can see if I changed a variable or input how would it affect my overall income. This means that even though some of my employees will have knowledge of computers some wont have a lot of experience in using computers so it moldiness be easy to use. I will combat this problem in the analysis.AnalysisResearchBefore beginning this project I did some research. I contacted the Milfield Theatre by email address asking for information on diverse types of tickets and the ticket prices. They sent me back some useful information on ticket prices, which I will use in my projectAdultsConcessions*Performanceon Friday12.0010.0 0Performances on Saturday and Sunday13.5011.50* Concessions include children under 16, senior citizens and NUS students. They also gave me their telephone number (020 8803 5283). I also visited their Website address (http//www.millfieldtheatre.co.uk/) Their Website was very good. It was very well presented. It was colourful and titles were big and bold. There were demonstrates separating text or in spaces and watermarks. Maybe I could use a picture or watermark of a theatre or two masks in my model, just to keep the users mind focused and interested but still keeps it on the same floor. Also the Website was simple and clear. It kept me interested and it wasnt hard to follow. These are all things I will need to use to make my model clear, pithy and interesting to the user.UsersThe people who would use this model are the manager and any other employee who works in the theatre. This means that even though some of the employees will have a good knowledge of how to use computers some o f them wont have a lot of experience in using computers so it must be easy to use. For example they must know exactly where to put their data so some cells could be highlighted to make it easier to see. Also I will protect important formula so people wont accidentally change any of them and ruin the calculations.PrototypeMy model will start send off with the different inputs, which will be the fixed costs and variable costs from like paying the cleaners, the actors, refreshment and the income from tickets and different refreshments. The agree costs will and so be worked out and so will the total income. The total costs will then be subtracted from the total income to see if I have made a profit or if I have made a loss. This will be used as a template on tercet piece of papers one for Friday, one for Saturday and one for Sunday. On a fourth sheet I will have a summary of the week with all the totals of different variables for example total number of tickets sold for the whole w eek. Also listed here will be the profit/loss for the whole week. The model will be reusable by using named cell addresses, which means that kinda of writing the cell name e.g. B3 you can lust write a name. Data ecesis will be used on some of the input cells to stop incorrect data being written and also the message indoors the stimulus box must be descriptive but concise.Functions and FormulasThese are the processes in the model and they use the inputs to produce the outputs.I will use different functions in the formula for my model. For example I will use the SUM function to work out the total costs and to work out the total income for the ruin days and the totals for the Summary Sheet (sheet 4) and the IF function will also be used to produce in designated cells either PROFIT, if the total costs are less than the income, or LOSS, if the total costs are more than the total income. This is an example of one of the outputs. This is one reason why I will use Microsoft outmatch be cause it has these different functions and formulas on it whereas on other pieces of software like Microsoft Word these cant be used. I will also use macros as a way of jumping from one sheet to another by having buttons at the bottom of each sheet saying for example Go to Summary sheet or Go to Friday sheet. Visual Basic Editor will be used to make the macros. This will make navigating the model very easy for people who dont have a good idea of how to get to different sheets.ObjectivesBased on my research above, my solution for the theatre model will have to get wind the following criteriaIt must be well presented and must keep the users interest1) Must be colourful2) Titles must be big and bold3) Pictures and watermarks relating to the theme of a theatre4) Tables must be clearly outlined so it can be clearly seen which piece of data goes with which table.5) It should be spaced out and not squeezed together so it is clear for the userThe formulae must be protected to avoid any of them being accidentally being changed.Cells, which are important, should be highlighted to bring attention to them. The model must be reusable named cell addresses can be used to give cells a name so instead of writing the cell name you can write the name. The model must calculate the total costs for the different days. The model must calculate the total income for the different days. The model must calculate the profit/loss for a single day by subtracting the costs form the income. The model must calculate the cumulative profit/loss for the day and the previous days. The model must either produce the word PROFIT or LOSS in designated cells using the IF function, whether a profit or a loss is made.A user must be able to navigate and go around the model with rilievo so macros should be used because they can link the different sheets with buttons. The model should not pose any health risks, whether it is radiation or making an employee tense up his/hers eyes therefore causing headaches.Da ta validation will be used on input boxes such as tickets sold. Also the message inside the comment box should be clear, descriptive but concise.Different sheets should be labelled so people know what is on the different sheets.Backing up (saving) the information stored must be possible to avoid data loss if the system of hardware fails or in the event of a security breach. The model must be able to show how a change in one or more inputs will affect the overall income. For example if I raised concession ticket prices but lowered ice cream prices how would this affect my income?

Pollution and How It Affects Elements within an Environment Essay Example for Free

Pollution and How It Affects Elements within an Environment EssayThe Earth is entirely surrounded by a blanket of cable which is called the earths atmosphere. The atmosphere allows human, plants, and all the earths creatures big and small to exist. The atmosphere protects the earth and without it the heat from the sun would burn all that is exposed to its rays, and we could be fixed by the low temps at night. Gas, particulate matter, odors that catch been introduced into the air by mankind or nature can destroy the natural balance, this is pollution. There be Primary pollutants and Secondary pollutants, which we will be covering in this presentation, when pollutants are introduced to/in the air, it travels very easily and spread as head, since we breathe in air, we cannot bend these toxins or pollutants. The efforts on solutions to the problems regarding pollution has, and will continue to be an issue due to mankind disrespect towards mother-nature.We as human beings breath e in an estimated 20,000 liters of air each day meaning that the more polluted the air is, the more we in hale into our lungs the hazardous chemicals, in London of 1952, The Smog Disaster, claimed the lives of four- gramme stack within a few days mainly due to the blue levels of concentrations of pollution. In March of 2011, an earthquake in the sea of the coast of japan also known as a Tsunami, the sea level rose and waters flooded the land damaging four of the six reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi atomic Power Plant, which can be located on the BBC website. The biggest lifetime risks were seen in humans exposed were in the infants, compared to children and the adults. Females who exposed to radiation from this incident which was found in a report that a four portion emergence above the lifetime expectancy, were at risk of solid tumors and a six percent increase above that said to be pass judgment of breast cancer. Men/male exposed to the radiation as infants were expected to have seven percent change magnitude risk of leukemia above that expected on the normal population. The highest risk was noted in thyroid cancer, as for the infant girls, they were estimated to be up to seventy- percent than expected over a lifetime. (BBC website /news/health- 21614722). The World Health Organization (WHO) experts confirmed that there is a slight increased risk of different cancer types for those people who were exposed to the radiation, including people residing in this area and employees of the plant.Air pollutants come in the form of gases, particles, and chemicals released into the air, motor vehicles are a major air pollutant, the use of unitary full commuter bus is equivalent to forty cars driving through your neighborhood. Vehicle exhaust contributes to roughly sixty-percent of all carbon monoxide emissions (discharge) nationwide, and up to ninety-five percent in the cities.Air pollution may contribute to asthma and allergy by corrupting protective stalls in the human body that tones down tolerant system reactions, the pollution components seem to also increase overactive immune warriors already linked to allergies that actually require no prompting. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the intersection point of burning of fuel in diesel engines, furnaces, wood fires, wildfires, and barbeque grills. A new study done by researchers found that children exposed to these high levels of PAHs had low functioning T-regulatory cells (peacekeeper cells), which normally keeps immune caused inflammation down.Kari Nadeau, a biochemist and physician at Stanford University, held a study on the effect of air pollution and these PAHs, she and some colleagues obtained affinity samples, took in lung function readings, and recorded health information from 153 children at the age of four-teen in Fresno, CA. She sampled airborne PAHs to estimate rates of exposure due to Fresnos high rate of air pollution levels. Kids with a high exposure made higher amounts of Immunoglobulin E and showed low rates of T regulatory cell function than those exposed to lower levels. It is said that air pollution may harm populations in ways so subtle and slow that it may have gone undetected, these reasons research is being done to determine the long-term effects of chronic exposure to low levels of pollution-what some may experience as well as to determine the interaction between air pollutants in the body, nutrition (physical factor), stress, alcohol, smoking (tobacco), and medicines. It also has been linked to defects in birth, cancer, and genetic mutations. The Montreal Protocol of 1987required that developed nations sign language the accord not to exceed 1986 CFC levels. Several more meetings were held from 1990 to 1997 to adopt agreements to hurry the phasing out of ozone-depleting substances. Pollution is known to cause holes in the ozone layer in the atmosphere above Antarctica and the Artic. Depletion of the ozone layer can increase the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth, causation damage to crops and plants as well as causing skin cancer and cataracts.

Dialogue Between Plato and Aristotle Essay Example for Free

Dialogue Between Plato and Aristotle EssayPluto No, listen. What I am verbalize is that the environment or form that we live in is full of unevenness, imperfection and impurity this due to the fact that this form is merely a copy of the ideal origination that one would understand once they rise above our physical environment and grasp it intelligenceually. Aristotle I understand you just fine but I disagree with you. I agree that our world is an imperfect world but I object to the nonion that it is not real or that there is other invisible form out there from which it is cloned. I find that preposterous, everything is right here on earth, physically.Pluto No. What we manipulate on earth physically as you say are just mimics or artificial replicas of the real thing only with a lot of imperfections. This is just an illusion of the real thing. Aristotle How send packing that be when our natural world is real and physical? Let me explain it to you clearly, our world, this wo rld is do up of many forms. Sure, they may not be ideal, polished or perfect but our senses identify with them. Pluto Well, our senses identify with them because they are copies of the perfect form and we have knowledge of them. Let me explain it to you.Knowledge must have as its object that which is openly real as juxtaposed with that which is an appearance only, that which is fully real must be fixed, permanent and unchanging- in the realm of being as opposed to that which is in the realm of physical. That is why you call these world physical when it is just a perception from the true ideal form. Aristotle That is derisory If experience has shown us anything is that individual substances exist and are real, being predicated of the substance and that an individual is not produced by some idea or model the real existPluto Now you have joined people inexperienced in the theory of forms. Captives in a cave, bound to the wall with no likeliness of turning your heads. With fire b urning behind you, you can only see the wall of the cave and the shadows of the puppets placed between you and the fire. You are incapable to fathom that the shadows you see and the echoes you hear are a reflection of real objects, behind you. This world that is available to our senses exists only as a reflection of the real world. AristotleHere is where I differ to you completely An individual is not formed from the perception of anothersmind but from an individual who through germ or bug was able to reproduce another one hence, the seed in the individual would be in potency form because of its capacity to become an individual in future. Every individual is a compound of matter and form, not a mirror or perception of another from another form. PlutoThat is just how scant(p) it is to mistake appearance for reality, just like the captives in the cave experience, they easily refer to the shadows using the names of the real objects that the shadows reflect. This just shows that knowl edge is only a reflection of the real ideas in our minds. What is seen on the earth is an imitation of the real thing. The captives, by looking at the shadows may learn what an item is but this does not modify them to claim that it refers to an object, which they have seen. Likewise, we need the physical objects in order to enable us acquire concepts. Aristotle So your idea is that we live in an imagined world and that is copied from an ideal world and that the physical items and entities we encounter on our day to day activities and with which our senses identify with are merely there for us to acquire concepts? Pluto Yes. on the nose Aristotle You are not serious You do realize that the possibility of error forces the mind to determine the truth validity of a given statement. Meaning the intellect must have adequate reasons, which can ensure the proposed judgment conforms to reality. These are the foundation of perfect knowledge, knowledge through causes. Not that we originate fro m some made up form that we cannot access, but that we originate from an individual. Matter is the indeterminate element, which is unchanging, and form is the force and power shaping and developing the individual. That is a structure of two statements ahead(p) to correct reasoning. Pluto So you object to my whole idea? Aristotle Completely It lacks a foundation and crumbles upon itself. Your own argument argues that there is need for physical objects to enable us acquire concepts but your idea is based on an unseen form that cannot be confirmed physically. Pluto We could argue about it for hours. Its a stalemate. Aristotle Seems we have found an impasse, but I win

Circumstances under which monopolies can benefit the consumer

Circumstances under which monopolies suffer benefit the consumerCompetition policies are set against monopolies in general. Explain wherefore this statement is true. Are there either circumstances under which monopolies can benefit the consumer?A monopoly is a situation in which a single troupe owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service. This would happen in the case that there is a barrier to entry into the industry that surrenders the single company to operate without competition (for example, vast economies of scale, barriers to entry, or g everywherenmental regulation). In such an industry structure, the producer get out lots produce a volume that is less than the amount which would maximize social welfare. The EU Competition rush is in charge of monitoring corrupt of market dominance by monopolies, and follows the Treaty establishing the European CommunityArticle 82 of the Treaty establishing the European Community is an anti-monopoly in strument. It outlaws any abuse by unity or more undertakings of a dominant position within the common market or in a substantial part of it in so far as it may affect the trade between Member States. Dominant position here means concentration or monopoly power which enables the true or firms to influence, by independent action as a buyer or a seller, the outcome of the market. However, the article doesnt define what size of market dispense constitutes a dominant position, as this can vary from product to product. The emphasis isnt on the existence of a dominant position but rather on the abuse of power, primarily in trade between member states. Dominant enterprises are stopped from committing price discrimination in their interstate purchases or sales.Microsoft is often at the forefront of monopoly investigationsIn December 1998, Sun Microsystems, another US company, complained that Microsoft had refused to provide in formulateation necessary for Sun to be able to develop product s that would be able to interface with Windows PCs, so be able to compete on an equal footing in the market for work group server in operation(p) systems. The Commissions investigation revealed that Sun was not the only company that had been refused this information, and that these non-disclosures by Microsoft were part of a broader strategy designed to shut competitors out of the market. In 2000, the Commission besides began to investigate the effect of Microsofts tying of another product, windows media player, to its operating system. This left other media player firms unable to compete. In 2004, after a 5-year-investigation, the European Commission conclude that the Microsoft Corporation broke European Union competition law by abusing its near monopoly in the market for PC operating systems and for media players.Microsoft had to disclose information to allow other firms to interface with the windows operating system. They were also fined 497 million for abusing its market power in the EU.In February 2008 the EU fined Microsoft a further 899 million for abusing its dominance of the market. *(skim over dont say all)*This diagram shows the effect of a monopoly on an economy you can see that consumers are left worse off through the loss of consumer surplus.Policies are set against monopolies in general because of the market failure that Monopolies causeMonopolies have titanic barriers to entry which pr evet other firms being able to enter the market this enables them to abuse their market dominance and set prices higher than the market equilibrium. If the product is price inelastic as there are no ersatzs too it (such as the motor industry), then the customer has no choice but to pay the higher prices, thus consumers are worse off. They are able to charge voracious prices which is when the firm sets artificially low prices which competitors arent able to compete with.Monopolies have less incentive to create good products because the customers have little or n o alternative to that product.Compared to a normal market structure, a monopoly market skews most of the positive externalities to the producer rather than the consumer.Certain forms or cooperation agreements between enterprises, which are considered serious for the consumers by improving production, distribution or technical progress, are deemed not to restrict competition and therefore they are exempted. Cross-border concentrations of community interest, regardless of whether they are brought about by agreement or by takeovers, are also exemptedThere are a number of potential benefits of monopoliesIts possible that monopoly firms can be efficientAn inclination popular with economists of the Austrian School of Economics is that firms who gain monopoly power are invariably successful, innovative and efficient. e.g. Google have monopoly power but who can do it any better?Stimulating Innovation and Investment with PatentsThe most obvious field where monopolies benefit society in a g reat way is that of patents. Patents give inventors the grievous bodily harm rights to market their inventions for twenty years, after which these inventions turn into public property. In other words, patents give these inventors the right to keep a monopoly for twenty years.Monopolies are so measurable in this context because if they did not exist, an inventor would probably not receive any financial compensation for his or her work, since the imitators would steal it and flood the market with copied stuff, make the price collapse along with them. As a result, in a world without patents, a lot less people would invest their time, effort and currency required to achieve new things. In order to remedy this situation, the nations all around the world offer inventors monopolies on patents. The result is much quicker basis an economic growth much more accelerated and at quicker speeds in the lifestyles. In truth, it is difficult to think about a more beneficial monopoly from the soc ial view of patents.Monopoly and Economies of ScaleIf long-run average total cost (LRATC) declines over an extended range of output, it is argued that it is better to have a few spectacular firms (and in the extreme case, only one firm). This is known as the natural monopoly argument.Because monopoly producers are often supplying goods and services on a very large scale, they may be better placed to take advantage of economies of scale leading to a fall in the average total costs of production. These reductions in costs will lead to an increase in monopoly profits but some of the gains in productive efficiency might be passed onto consumers in the form of lower prices. The effect of economies of scale is shown in the diagram.Examples of Natural Monopolies include public utilities such as water services and electricity. It is very expensive to build contagious disease networks (water/gas pipelines, electricity and telephone lines), therefore it is unlikely that a potential competi tor would be willing to make the capital investment needed to even enter the monopolists market.ConclusionCompetition policies can be seen as generally set against monopolies, as monopolies can be such obstructions to competition, so the Competition Commission is going to have a lot of focus on managing monopolies making sure they dont abuse their position. Though, Monopolies arent necessarily all bad as natural monopolies can be the most effective market structure, benefiting both the firm and the consumer. However Competition Policies arent only set against monopolies, as they also have a high-risk focus on aspects such as Mergers, takeovers and collusions of firms like cartels.
